Strategy Analytics research shows that the Apple App Store captured a 12% volume share of the mobile applications market in 2008. However, the App Store's value is significantly lower due to intense competition between developers which has pushed down application prices.
 
New figures from Gartner show smartphone sales increased to 36 million units worldwide in the first quarter, representing 13.5 percent of all handset sales in the quarter. Research In Motion saw its smartphone market share jump to 19.9 percent, up from 13.3 percent in the year-ago quarter, and Apple saw its market share rise to 10.8 percent, up from 5.3 percent in the first quarter of 2008.
